El-Hadji Diouf admits he was taken aback when he was handed the Doncaster Rovers captain's armband on the weekend.
In the absence of regular skipper George Friend, the Senegalese striker led the Championship club into battle for the scoreless draw with Watford on the weekend and says it was a surprise that manager Dean Saunders selected him.
"It was a surprise and I didn't know before the game," Diouf told the Yorkshire Post. "I was surprised when the gaffer told me but it shows anything can happen in football.
"I was captain for a time at Bolton Wanderers and for Senegal and the most important thing is what you show on the pitch and outside the pitch.
"The gaffer wanted to give me that responsibility and now I have to show him that I deserve it."
