Ex-Leicester, Chelsea midfielder Drinkwater announces retirement

Former Manchester United, Leicester and Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has announced his retirement.

Drinkwater hangs up the boots at the age of 33. He won three caps with England.

"I've been in limbo too long - I've been wanting to play but not getting the opportunity to play at a standard or level where I felt valued," he told Jake Humphrey's 'High Performance' podcast.

"You wrestle with yourself for quite a while. I had three training camps on my own and it's not easy to get the motivation.

"You need games, to be around the lads, constant training with the team - you think I'm happy not playing football and I'm happy playing football, so do you just shake hands with the sport?"
