Ex-Crystal Palace defender Hangeland: De Boer doomed from the start

Former Crystal Palace star Brede Hangeland has explained that Frank De Boer was bound to fail at Selhurst Park.

De Boer was sacked from his post as manager of Palace following only four matches in charge and ex-Eagles' defender Brede Hangeland has claimed that the Dutchman was doomed to fail from the start after looking to drastically change the style of play.

Hangeland said: "I have to say, what's going on? Why employ him in the first place? With that club and that squad, you have to understand what gets you results.

"It has to be a compact style at Palace. It is a tough call looking from the outside, but it became clear very early it was the wrong direction to go in.

"The style he wanted to play is the most difficult style of play, and it's nearly impossible if you don't have confidence and have results against you.

"If things aren't going well, you need to simplify things and be compact and hard to beat. That style is opposite of what Frank de Boer wanted to play, and I can see why it didn't go well.

"Had he got some results and some more time, maybe it could have worked but as a starting point I thought it was a wrong style for Crystal Palace, going on my time there.

"Even before, when Tony Pulis was there, it was clear to see that Palace - that team - is at its best when it's compact and hard to beat, strong on the counter and at set-pieces. So when I watched the games this season, I felt for the players as you could see it just wasn't going to work."
