Ex-Celtic, Norwich, Blackburn striker Sutton: I'll be pleased for brother John when he outscores me

Former Celtic star Chris Sutton admits he will be pleased for his younger brother John if he were to go past his Scottish Premier League goals tally.

Heart of Midlothian's John Sutton has scored 62 goals in Scotland's top flight for the Jambos, Dundee, St Mirren and Motherwell, one short of Chris' tally of 63 that he scored for the Hoops 2000 and 2006.

Sutton Snr admits he was surprised when learning the statistic but says he will be happy for his sibling who has two matches to beat the total by the end of the season.

"I'm proud of John for what he's done in his career," he told SunSport.

"I'd be pleased for him if he beats my record.

"I didn't know about it until you told me. I was shocked, I have to admit.

"But John's played up there for a while now.

"You also have to remember that in recent seasons he hasn't played as often as he would have liked at Hearts. If he'd been a regular the chances are he would probably already be way past my record.

"We get on well, although I haven't spoken to him about my goals record.

"If and when it happens I'll just have to make sure my phone's off - and pretend I don't know about it.

"But I wish John good luck. There are still enough games left for him to do it this season.

"I was pleased with the amount of goals I scored at Celtic. But my SPL record is not something I've ever particularly thought of."
