Ex-Celtic keeper Hughes made Liverpool bench for victory over Sheffield Utd

Liam Hughes was on Liverpool's bench for victory over Sheffield United - just weeks after his move from Celtic.

With first-choice stopper Alisson missing following the death of his dad, Hughes was named as one of two back-ups to Adrian for the game at Bramall Lane.

The Northern Irish Under-21 cap has only ever made one senior career appearance for Portadown in the Irish league.

Hughes made his first outing for the English Premier League champions' Under-23 squad recently.

And goalkeeping coach Mark Morris reckons the teenager is one for the future.

He said: “Liam was basically back in Northern Ireland waiting to go on trial at places and see what he could get.

“The personality we wanted to come in and train is a tricky one; they have to know the reason they're coming in and not be knocking on our door after two or three months saying, 'I'm not playing.'

“You're going to improve because of the calibre of the players you're training with."
