Ex-Barcelona star Marquez leaves NYRB for Leon

Rafael Marquez has departed New York Red Bull to join Mexican outfit Club Leon.

The 33-year old Mexico international will return to play in his homeland for the first time since leaving Atlas for Monaco in 1999. Marquez then spent about seven years with Barcelona before joining the Red Bulls in 2010.

Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh confirmed he was leaving the Red Bull Arena whilst Leon president Jesus Martinez revealed he has signed with the Liga MX side.

"This decision has been made in the best interests of both parties concerned," said Roxburgh. "Rafa has accomplished a great deal during his career and is a top quality player. We want to thank him for his service to the Red Bulls and wish him the best of luck in the next stage of his career."

Martinez added on Twitter: "I'm sure that our fans will give Leon's newest player, Rafael Marquez, the best welcome."
