Everton are believed to be eyeing Tom Cleverley as a potential replacement for sought-after star Ross Barkley.
The Daily Star suggests that the Toffees have Aston Villa loanee Cleverley, who is on a season-long spell from Manchester United, as a possible contingency plan for Barkley if he happens to leave this winter.
Talented youngster Barkley is a target for Manchester City, among other Premier League clubs, and could be on his way out if Everton receive an offer of around £40million this January.
That lucrative sale would open the door for a £7million move for 25-year old Cleverley who has started 16 times for Villa since arriving from United.
