The Liverpool Echo reports that Everton's assistant manager Alan Irvine is on the verge of being named Preston North End's new boss.

Though the move has still to be rubber-stamped, it is understood that Irvine will end his five-and-a-half year spell as David Moyes' assistant and take over the job vacated by Paul Simpson.
