The veteran first-team coach - a former midfield player himself - is happy with Rodwell's contribution so far, and says that he is learning all the time.
Lumsden told evertontv: "The game at Man City where Jack man-marked David Silva was a learning curve for him and I thought he did really well.
"He stuck tight to him and got tackles in and that is a part of his game he has to learn - that when he is playing against someone he has got to win that individual battle first before he can play himself.
"It is like a personal battle when you are playing against another midfield player and you have got to win the battle if you are going to win the war. You have got to tackle and get tight and it is not a case of you letting him play and him letting you play. That will gradually come with Jack because he is strong, he is quick and he has all the attributes to be a really good midfield player."
