Everton kid Rodwell happy after England U21 strike

Everton youngster Jack Rodwell was delighted to get on the scoresheet in England U21's 7-0 friendly victory over Azerbaijan.

"As far as I've seen, it just went straight in the goal," he said. "People can tell me it got deflected on the way but I'm not quite sure about that. Obviously I'd like to claim it and cap the game with a goal.

"Just to get on the pitch for the Under-21s is an honour and to get on the scoresheet is brilliant."

England were already three goals to the good when Rodwell emerged from the bench at half time, in what was a perfect warm-up for next week's European Under-21 Championships in Sweden.

"The attitude was good from the first whistle to the final whistle," said Rodwell, who is now focusing on Monday's opener against Finland. "We kept on going and played some good stuff.

"We've got a young squad and some good young players coming through which is always good for English football.

"I'll go home now for a couple of days and relax and then come back sharp again on Thursday and take it into the next game."
