Everton coach Stubbs: Celtic well ahead making Lafferty's words redundant

Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs hopes the club can make Kyle Lafferty eat his words by winning the title as soon as possible.

The Rangers forward said this week that the Ibrox club have the best team in Scotland after they won the Old Firm derby 3-2 on Sunday but Everton coach Stubbs says that is the opinion of a man just 'shouting his mouth off'.

Celtic currently sit 18 points clear of Rangers, and even without the 10-point deduction the Blues received for falling into administration, the Hoops would be well clear to take home the title which Stubbs pointed out clearly following Lafferty's comments.

"Celtic would still be well ahead even if Rangers hadn't been deducted 10 points and you can't lose sight of that," he told Record Sport.

"Certain players have a habit of shouting their mouths off. That's just the way they are.

"I'm sure when Kyle Lafferty looks back he will realise the best team are currently sitting at the top of the league. Rangers are a long way off the pace and I think for Celtic's sake it would be good if they won the league by more than 10 points.

"If they don't then the deduction will be mentioned at every turn when you look back at this season. Lenny and the boys will be desperate to win the title by as many points as possible.

"They will be hurting after the weekend as it was a convincing win for Rangers. They will be desperate to win the title by a record margin.

"That has to be the aim. That's the best way to answer what Lafferty has to say for himself. Do your talking on the pitch, not in the papers.

"If Celtic win the league by the biggest margin then there can be no dispute. You don't have to say anything else because the table will speak for itself. If I was the manager, that would certainly be my target between now and the end of the season."
