Everton captain Jagielka: Pickford set for big World Cup

Everton captain Phil Jagielka is backing Jordan Pickford for a big World Cup with England.

Pickford is in the running to be Gareth Southgate's stopper for the tournament, which begins on 14 June, alongside Stoke City's Jack Butland and Nick Pope of Burnley.

“He'll handle the World Cup like he does everything else, take it in his stride and with the belief he can produce the goods," said Jagielka.

“I've been lucky enough to play for England at a World Cup and it's something to be proud of. Now we hope he gets the chance to do it this summer in Russia.

“We all know Jordan's ability and if he gets the nod to start, I'm sure he'll show everyone what he can do – like he has been doing at Everton all season."

He added: “Jordan's shown he's an excellent shot-stopper, commands his box well, and has great distribution. He's still young and hopefully he'll be this club's number one for many years to come."
