Everton boss Roberto Martinez says securing Ross Barkley to a new deal was crucial this summer.
Barkley attracted interest from Manchester United and their crosstown rivals this summer, but ended up putting pen to paper on an improved four year deal which will see him earn £65,000-a-week.
Chelsea were also thought to be keen in the 20-year-old although failed to act upon their interest.
"It was great to keep hold of him and it shows ambition which is quite rare," Martinez said.
"Ross wanted to stay at Everton and fulfil talent he has. He's one for the future and it was important to keep him.
"To keep a player of his talent sometimes is most satisfying. It is good we go into the new season with a strong backbone."
