In Italy, Juventus gave themselves every chance of progressing to the Round of 16 by beating Turkish side Trabzonspor 2-0 thanks to goals from Southampton loanee Dani Osvaldo and an injury-time strike from Paul Pogba.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Ukrainian side Dnipro courtesy of a late penalty from Yevhen Konoplyanka while an impressive Swansea City were held to a 0-0 draw by Napoli in south Wales.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina defeated Danish side Esbjerg 3-1 away, Sevilla drew 2-2 with NK Maribor in Slovenia, Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg upset Dutch giants Ajax 3-0 in Amsterdam as Valencia scored a 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev.
