EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL: Three-peat for Sevilla as Liverpool flounder in Basel

Sevilla have won the Europa League for an unprecedented third-straight time courtesy of a come-from-behind win over Liverpool in Basel.

Unai Emery's side showed resilience at St Jakob-Park to come from a goal down at half-time to triumph 3-1 and add the 2016 Europa League trophy to the 2014 and 2015 cups, as well as the 2006 and 2007 editions, making it five of this kind in the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan trophy cabinet.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds were dominant in the first half, particularly the final 15 minutes of the opening 45, and went into the break thanks to a stunner from Daniel Sturridge.

The first goal came on 35 minutes when Roberto Firmino found Sturridge on the edge of the area before the England striker produced a cracking finish with the outside of his left boot which gave David Soria no chance at all.

Liverpool were pulsating as the first half came to a close and it was hard to see how Sevilla would find a way back in, even after the English club had a goal disallowed when Dejan Lovren headed home from a corner, only for Sturridge to be flagged offside for getting in the path of the goalkeeper.

Liverpool were beaming going into the dressing room but within 17 seconds of the second half, Sevilla had equalised and it was game on.

From kick-off, the Sevillistas probed before Alberto Moreno's mistimed header fell for Mariano Ferreira and the Brazilian right-back took control, before nutmegging the former Sevilla left-back, and placing a pinpoint low pass for leading scorer Kevin Gameiro to tap home with ease.

It was the Frenchman's eighth goal in nine outing in the competition this season.

In the 64th minute, the Spaniards edged ahead with an incisive move which resulted in Vitolo finding an onrushing Coke who delivered an absolutely sublime finish from the edge of the area which curled inside Simon Mignolet's far post.

That had Los Rojiblancos rocking and it took just six minutes to add a third which came in controversial circumstances.

Nathaniel Clyne's clearance bounced back off the foot of Philippe Coutinho, falling kindly for Coke, who fired beyond Mignolet much to the dismay of the Reds but the decision not flag for offside was correct.

From there it was all academic as Klopp rung the changes in a bid to get his side back into proceedings but Sevilla held strong to give Emery a record-equalling third Europa League final.

That is now five finals in a row that Klopp has been beaten, including two with the Merseysiders, following their penalties loss to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup at Wembley in February.

The loss denies them Champions League football for next season but on the other side of the coin, Sevilla are straight into the group stage proper of Europe's premier club competition and will also contest the UEFA Super Cup against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

Sevilla also have the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) against Barcelona at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid this weekend.
