Euro2016: Man Utd skipper Rooney relieved England onus no longer on his shoulders

Wayne Rooney has revealed he is relieved that being England's sole hope of going far in a tournament is no longer his responsibility.

The Three Lions captain has for too long been his nation's great white hope but as he and his teammates prepare for Monday's Round of 16 clash with Iceland in Nice, the Manchester United star admits it is a nice feeling to look around and see a number of other match-winners.

"The pressure is on us all to do well but I have always gone into a tournament thinking if I don't play at my best I cannot see us winning it," he said.

"I have come into this tournament and we have players capable of doing magical things.

"Now I am happy to sit in the background and allow other players do that. We are different but we have match-winners. We have five or six match-winners in our team and I cannot say we have always had that.

"Other tournaments, I haven't played as well as I can do, and I accept that. In terms of this one, I look at it and wonder how I can do better than in previous tournaments and do better for the team.

"I think the position I am playing in midfield suits me and suits the team. If I have to be the person to step up and win us games, I will do that. But I am happy with the way it is going and my role in the team."
