Euro2016: England players no better than Premier League level - Carragher

Former England international Jamie Carragher believes the current crop of Three Lions players are no better than merely Premier League standard.

England were humiliated by minnows Iceland in the Round of 16 at Euro2016, losing 2-1 in Nice on Monday night, in what was an enormously subpar performance from Roy Hodgson's men.

In the wake of the loss, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher analysed the England players for their poor display on Sky Sports News HQ, indicating that perhaps they lack any genuine quality within their ranks.

Asked whether England players perform much better for their club over their country, Carragher said: "I've been part of England squads that have had the same said about us - not playing as well as we do for our club.

"It's a good England squad - it's got plenty of good Premier League players - but we don't have really top-class players who've done it at Champions League level, who have done it at real England level.

"Of course we've got Wayne Rooney but he's coming to the end of his career, he's over 30 now. They're Premier League players but they're not more than that.

"They're just an average bunch of players really. The players are nowhere near good enough."
