England coach Gareth Southgate can understand U21 boss Lee Carsley interesting the Republic of Ireland.

The former Everton midfielder is being linked with senior Ireland job.

“He enjoys the job he does with us. We're really happy working with him," said Southgate.

“From our perspective, he really understands the development part of his role and the fact we pinch his players all the time. I've done that job and it's not easy but he's done it exceptionally well. He's got a great way with the players and they enjoy playing for him.

“He and his coaching team are adding to the development of those players. That's fantastic for us.

“Yeah. It's more John's role (McDermott) to discuss those things, he's technical director. Lee has done a fabulous job. I think he feels valued by us but of course I can understand why other people would be interested in him as well."
