England boss Southgate: We've given belief for generations

England manager Gareth Southgate says that winning a penalty shootout at the World Cup against Colombia will give the national team belief for many generations.

The English were able to finally break their World Cup hoodoo with penalty shootouts, having never won a World Cup shootout in their history.

Southgate himself knew the disappointment of missing a penalty, having missed the crucial spotkick in the Euro 95 semi final against Germany.

Now he helped the current generation break through that hoodoo.

"We have fantastic supporters who have had to stand with us through decades of disappointment and this was a really special moment for our country," Southgate is quoted as saying by ESPN.

"Today will give belief for generations to follow and not be hindered by history or expectations.

"The players have really executed everything [in the shootout] that we've talked about exceptionally well and we showed incredible resilience to come back from huge disappointment at the final whistle and keep our calm. It's a special moment for us."

England will face Sweden in the last eight of the World Cup, with the winner facing a semi final against either Russia or Croatia.
