Brett Emerton admits his final game for Blackburn Rovers was a bittersweet moment in his career.
The 32-year old was handed the captains armband by manager Steve Kean but the side lost 1-0 to Everton at Ewood Park in what was his 294th and final match for the club.
Emerton, who has returned to Australia to join Sydney FC, said it was a nice honour to lead the boys out and was full of praise for the fans but feels a little hollow after the team missed plenty of chances to eventually lose to a Mikel Arteta penalty in injury time.
"The fans were outstanding. I couldn't ask for anything more from them," Emerton told the Lancashire Telegraph.
"It's been a fantastic eight years and, apart from the result, it was a fantastic way to end my career here. It was an honour to captain the team. It was a nice touch by the manager to enable me to do that, so I thank him for that.
"I felt very positive that we were going to get the result we wanted. We should have got the three points. Sometimes we won't play half as well and get the points.
"That's the way things go, but the most important thing is to stay positive."
