Kiwi Simon Elliott is in a straight battle with Finn Aki Riihilahti for a place on the San Jose Earthquakes roster. Elliott, formerly of LA Galaxy, is a free agent from Fulham and the San Jose Mercury says he has impressed Quakes coaching staff with his fitness.

San Jose would have to find roster room to accommodate Elliott, who currently has an advantage over Finnish midfielder Riihilahti. The Finn has been practicing with the team but didn't play Friday.
