Vancouver Whitecaps have placed Carlyle Mitchell's proposed loan to FC Edmonton on hold following the injury to Jay DeMerit.
The 25-year old Trinidad & Tobago international was set to spend time with the NASL club but has had his loan delayed after Whitecaps skipper DeMerit sustained a season-ending Achilles injury in the weekend's week one victory over Toronto FC.
"I think there's still a chance that (loan) might be possible," Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie said in a TEAM 1410 radio interview. "But right now, obviously we need to have Carlyle here."
DeMerit's injury leaves Rennie with just four fit centre-backs - Brad Rusin, Andy O'Brien, Johnny Leveron and Mitchell - forcing the Whitecaps boss to postpone the latter's temporary shift away from BC Place.
