Dutch heroes mocked as Bergwijn stars on Spurs debut

Tottenham midfielder Steven Bergwijn has managed to show up local pundits back in Holland after the superb start to his Premier League career.

Signed from PSV Eindhoven last week, Bergwijn scored on debut in victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

However before the game, Dutch heroes Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp both told Spurs manager Jose Mourinho to introduce his new signing gradually.

"This weekend they have to go to Manchester City. Then you should not let such a boy make his debut," said Derksen, who received support from Van der Gijp on Veronica Inside.

Of course, the rest is history, with Dutch journalist Henk Spaan, writing for Het Parool in the aftermath, mocking: "They were so eager to show the derogatory predictions of Gijp and Derksen. That would be the bench for Bergwijn.

"Mourinho was not crazy. At PSV they are now testing the scales. Five kilos too heavy right...?"

Spaan was referring to the rumour that Bergwijn reported back to PSV overweight after the winter break.
