Manchester United have fended off Barcelona to sign academy player Angel Gomes to his first professional contract.
Gomes made his first-team debut last season as a 16-year-old and is regarded as one of the brightest talents to come out of the academy in many years.
The midfielder has captained England at Under 16, 17 and 18 levels, and helped the Young Lions win the U17 World Cup in India earlier this year.
A club statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce that Angel Gomes has signed his first professional contract with the club."
And Gomes told the club's website: “Manchester United has always been a big part of my life. I have been with the club since the age of six and it was a proud moment for me when I made my first team debut.
“This club is renowned for giving home grown players opportunities to progress into the first team and that was a major factor in me signing my first professional contract at this great club. I am still young but am looking forward to continuing my development with the help of the coaching staff and I will take every opportunity that comes my way."
Christmas is always a good time for Angels...
