Disciplinary issues overshadow Scotland World Cup win

Scotland defeated Iceland 2-1 at Hampden Park in World Cup qualifying Group 9. However, this was overshadowed by captain Barry Ferguson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor being dropped from the team after a late-night drinking session.

The crucial strikes came from Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher both claiming their first international goals.

Indridi Sigurdsson had equalised for the visitors but the Scots clung on for a valuable three points.

Afterwards, coach George Burley insisted Ferguson and McGregor still have a future with Scotland.

"They are in the squad," he said. "Nothing changes."

When asked whether he sees any reason why they should not play for Scotland again, he replied: "No reason at all."

Burley also claimed there was no problem with his relationship with his skipper, adding: "No problem. I haven't got any problem.

"The most important thing is the squad and we kept them all together. That was very important not to change it around.

"Tonight was about getting the three points," said Burley.

"You have to make decisions, pick the team, pick the formation and pick the squad. You hope it works out.

"You have to be bold; this wasn't a night to be cautious. I think it paid off."
