Ex-West Ham attacker Payet started in a front three for Marseille, having scored his first goal in his second spell at the club in midweek with deflected free kick versus Guingamp.

But he faded into the background as relegation-threatened Nantes - who had only managed five home league goals this season until Sunday night - dominated play.

Nantes eventually went onto win 3-2.
