Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio remains keen on Lazio defender Modibo Diakite.

Diakite is off contract next month and is in talks with Napoli, though as yet nothing has been agreed.

Sportitalia says Di Canio has already recommended Diakite to Sunderland chairman Ellis Short this week after their Premier League status was confirmed.

A contract offer could be tabled next week to the defender's camp.
