Di Canio to guide Sunderland chiefs with summer transfers

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio says he will take a back seat in regards to the clubs summer transfer plans.

The Italian knows the type of players he wants but will allow chairman Ellis Short and incoming director of football Roberto Di Fanti to do the work.

"I know that the club has a plan, and the picture is clear before me of how it will work," Di Canio told the Sunderland Echo.

"I am head coach, the others have to handle the financial situation.

"I have said to them, we need this type of player, this type of quality, in this position or that position, so show me the players we can go and get and I will tell them, 'Yes, this player is okay' or 'No, this player is not'."

Di Canio is determined to bring some quality players to the Stadium of Light this offseason as he seeks to vastly improve their 17th-place finish in 2012/13.
