Derby's McEveley: Ternant saved my career

Derby County fullback Jay McEveley has welcomed the appointment of Stan Ternent as new assistant manager.

McEveley's bright start as a young left-back at Blackburn was fizzling out a few years ago and he found himself in the Reserves.

He was 19 at the time and wondering where his career was heading.

Ternent had taken charge of Gillingham who were struggling in the Championship and he signed McEveley on loan for the final two months of the 2004-05 season.

McEveley played 10 games for the Gills and believes the move helped to point him in the right direction.

One of his appearances came against Derby at Pride Park Stadium in April 2005.

"I'm just glad people like Stan showed faith in me," the Scottish international told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "Stan took me on loan at Gillingham and gave me a run of games which gave me confidence."
