The former Birmingham City, Leicester City and Manchester United midfielder declared on his Twitter page: "Breaking news I will retire at the end of the season!!"

Savage was recently linked with a move to the Vancouver Whitecaps but has also been involved in media work and wrote: "Two TV deals are on the table and a host of radio shows!! Good time to go!"

Savage, 36, began his career on Manchester United's books before moving on to Crewe.

He quit international football in 2005, after winning 39 caps.
