Coton: Van der Sar no guarantee to be Man Utd No1

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tony Coton says Edwin van der Sar can't expect a guaranteed starting place next season.

"Tomas Kuszczak has been forced out of Euro 2008 with Poland because of a back injury but he is eager to do well at United and will be ready to go for next season," Coton told the Manchester Evening News.

"Ben Foster made it to the England squad and then had his cruciate knee injury setback that lost him virtually all of the season.

"Now he'll be champing at the bit. I think the competition for the role will be at its highest ever.

"I never knew it as fierce as it is going to be this pre-season.

"Edwin is the man in possession though and his performance in Moscow and for Holland tells me he won't be letting go easily.

"It is up to the younger lads to put pressure on the old dog! He's not ready to give the jersey up yet by any stretch of the imagination.

"May the best man win."
