Controversial goal broke heart of Everton - Martinez

Roberto Martinez felt Manchester City's second goal knocked the stuffing out of Everton.

City managed to level the aggregate score at 3-3 when Raheem Sterling cut the ball back for Kevin De Bruyne to score in the 70th minute in the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The ball had clearly crossed the byline but the goal was not disallowed, much to the dismay of Martinez, who felt his side were still in the game until that moment.

"It was a really good game of football, we were very strong in the performance, but goals are big calls and the second goal is heartbreaking," said Martinez.

"When you watch the replay it is incredible that you don't get that decision right and, you can go into many aspects of the performance, but goals were going to be very important, we knew that.

"It's impossible to describe how you feel when you see the decision once more, it's so clear and so big in how the game was developing, it's heartbreaking.

"I don't think anyone in the stadium would disagree, that goal was the major change in the tie."

Sergio Aguero then headed City into an overall lead six minutes later to send Manuel Pellegrini's side through to the Wembley final where they will meet Liverpool on February 28.
