Columbus Crew return unlikely for Cunningham

Columbus Crew's selection of Jeff Cunningham in the MLS Re-Entry Draft appears not to have come to fruition with the club and player unable to agree terms on a deal.

The 34-year old is a Crew favourite following his successful spell there between 1998 and 2004 which netted over 60 goals and it was believed he was close to re-joining the club after the threw him a lifeline after his FC Dallas career appeared to be over.

But Crew technical director Brian Bliss has confirmed that is now unlikely.

"We made an offer that was rejected and he made a counterproposal that was a bit far-fetched," Bliss said. "That was the last conversation we had.

"I don't want to say it was on a whim, but if we can't come to an agreement, we're OK with that," Bliss said of the draft selection. "We thought, 'He's available, so let's see if we can't get something done.'"
