Chris Smalling delighted signing new Roma contract

Chris Smalling has signed a new deal with AS Roma.

With his previous contract expiring this month, Smalling has now penned terms to 2025.

Smalling said, "I am very happy to stay at Roma. It was an easy decision to make. Because the the last few years have been some of the best of my career. Especially when I think about the fans. Regardless of who we face, their support is incredible. I think about when I walk the dog or go shopping... It was an easy choice. I'm happy to continue my career here.

" We've had some ups and downs this season. But the fans have always followed us, even away from home. They have always supported us. It's not that common in football and luckily I can be a part of it all.

"Let's say when I came on loan it was a last minute decision, but it was one of the best choices I've ever made, in footballing terms. I don't miss anything here, so it was easy to decide to stay. For me, for my sporting ambitions, for my family. It was a perfect choice."

On coach Jose Mourinho, the former Manchester United defender added: "José has a huge presence, he has a huge reputation but, of course, I already knew him before. When he arrived at Roma, I understood right away that he would help raise the level of the team. It bore fruit last year, when we won the cup and he did this year. If there is a person like him, a true leader and a point of reference, it can only be a good thing."
