Chelsea will not make premature call on Di Matteo - Gourlay

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has made it clear that the club will not prematurely appoint Roberto Di Matteo as permanent manager.

The Italian took the job on an interim basis when Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in March with the Blues initially stating the role would only be filled by Di Matteo until the end of the season.

The former West Bromwich Albion boss is heavily tipped to take the job after guiding Chelsea into the Champions League final against the odds but Gourlay says that it is important for the club to stick to their guns.

"It's very important that we follow out what we said originally, we appointed Robbie [Di Matteo] as an interim manager until the end of the season," he told talkSPORT.

"We decided that we wouldn't start any speculation during the period that we have between now and the end of the season where we have some very important games to play and we have agreed that we would leave that until the end of the season.

"Since Robbie took over we've had 15 games, 10 wins, four draws and one defeat. It's been a good turnaround.

"We just went through a period where performances and results weren't very good and we've managed to turn that around with the same team of players.

"We've got to focus on the remaining six games that we have between now and the end of the season and I know it's the old cliche, 'one game at a time', but honestly that's the way that we've set ourselves up since Robbie took over and it's working very, very well."
