Chelsea were keen on Benfica wing-back Fabio Coentrao in the summer.
The Mirror says Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti was so concerned Ashley Cole would go that they lined up Portuguese star Fabio Coentrao as his replacement.
Coentrao is now being linked with Liverpool ahead of the January market.
