Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are expected to thrash out Thibaut Courtois' status for their Champions League semi this week.
The Mail on Sunday says UEFA's recent intervention indicated Chelsea would be in breach of competition rules if they tried to enforce an £8million penalty clause that is written into Courtois's contract should he play against them.
The issue is complicated by the fact that Courtois's representatives are in talks about a new four-year deal with Chelsea which would be signed at the end of the season, with the plan for the goalkeeper to return to Atletico for another campaign. The new contract would not have the £8m clause.
