Chelsea boss Graham Potter admits he wants to see Mateo Kovacic offered new terms.
Potter says he sees Kovacic as a key part of his future plans.
He said, "The club talks to the players about these issues every day. It doesn't mean it's revealed publicly. I have enormous respect for him as a person. He has been fantastic with us, he has played an important part in the team and has also been captain in the last few games.
"From my point of view he is important, but the negotiation is between him and the club. He had a knee problem before the World Cup which he is continuing to heal now, it was a challenge for him and the way he managed it was absolutely fantastic.
"He did a great job behind the scenes to be available."
