Frank Lampard believes if he and Steven Gerrard played for the same club side they would have a flourishing midfield partnership. Despite being the stars of Chelsea and Liverpool with regular all-action displays, the duo have rarely replicated that form at international level.

Lampard told the Daily Mail: "Steve? What a fantastic player. I watched him against Everton the other week and it was a complete performance, he was the driving force.

"The pace he puts into a game is what I love. It can be going along at one tempo and he will just up it, like clicking his fingers.

"When he was supposed to be coming to Chelsea, I was really excited.

"We would have been a great partnership and that big question, about playing together, would have been put to bed quite quickly had we worked together day in, day out."
