CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: Chelsea hit 6, Bayern and Shakhtar 7 in free-scoring European night

Matchday 3 of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League kicked off with a bang with no less than 40 goals scored in the eight matches.

In the earlier fixture, CSKA Moscow came from two goals down to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw in another stuttering European performance from the English champions.

Sergio Aguero and James Milner had City in a strong position at half-time but second-half goals from Seydou Doumbia and Bibras Natcho gave the Russians a share of the points in front of an empty stadium.

In the other Group E clash, German giants Bayern Munich stunned AS Roma by putting seven past them in a 7-1 demolition job in Italy.

Arjen Robben scored a double while five other Bayern players got in on the act as the Bundesliga title-holders again asserted their dominance on European football.

Group G saw a goal-fest with Chelsea hammering NK Maribor 6-0 thanks to an Eden Hazard brace while Schalke edged ten-man Sporting Lisbon 4-3 in a thriller in Gelsenkirchen.

Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk destroyed BATE Borisov 7-0 in Belarus with Luiz Adriano scoring a remarkable five times as FC Porto got the better of Athletic Bilbao 2-1.

And in Group F, Barcelona defeated Ajax 3-1 at the Camp Nou while Paris Saint-Germain required a late winner from Edinson Cavani to beat APOEL Nicosia 1-0.

Wednesday night's fixtures included Real Madrid's trip to Liverpool, Anderlecht hosting Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund away at Galatasaray and Olympiakos at home against Juventus.
