CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: Arsenal hold PSG, Barcelona smash Celtic, Bayern Munich hit five

The opening night of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League season took place around Europe on Tuesday night.

In Group A, Arsenal were able to nick a point in Paris by holding PSG to a 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes.

Edinson Cavani headed home Serge Aurier's cross in the opening minute before Alexis Sanchez fired home for the Gunners on 78 minutes to give Arsene Wenger's side a share of the spoils despite Unai Emery's men producing enough chances throughout.

In the other group match, Swiss champions FC Basel were held to a 1-1 draw by Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad who took the lead through Jonathan Cafu on the stroke of half-time before Renato Steffen grabbed a leveller in the 79th minute.

Group B saw Arek Milik score a brace to give Napoli a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Dynamo Kyiv who scored first through Denys Harmash while Benfica were hurt by their own player, Talisca, who scored a sublime injury-time free-kick of Besiktas to force a 1-1 draw following Franco Cervi's first-half opener in Lisbon.

Taliscsa was sent on loan to Besiktas from Benfica just a few weeks ago…

In Group C, Barcelona inflicted Celtic's worst-ever European defeat by winning 7-0 at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi scored his sixth Champions League hat-trick, Luis Suarez grabbed a double and Neymar had four assists as Luis Enrique's side ran riot in Catalonia.

In England, Manchester City's home meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach was postponed until tomorrow night because of torrential rain.

Group D's matches had Bayern Munich turning it on in the second half to beat newcomers Rostov 5-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Youngster Joshua Kimmich scored a brace while usual suspects Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller were also on the scoresheet before substitute Juan Bernat rounded it out with a cracking goal.

And Saul Niguez further proved his worth to Atletico Madrid with a first-half winner in their eventual 1-0 triumph over PSV Eindhoven in Holland.

Groups E to H, plus the City v Gladbach fixture, will ask take place on Wednesday night.
