CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Patient Chelsea tested by Nordsjaelland but come away with maximum points

European champions Chelsea have secured their first victory of the new Champions League campaign with a 4-0 result over Nordsjaelland at the Parken Stadion in Copenhagen.

Pre-game it seemed as though it would be a real David versus Goliath contest but the reigning Danish champions, who had to play away from their normal home venue of Farum Park, were impressive with their style which tested the Blues in the first half.

However, Chelsea flexed their muscle late in the game to score three goals in the final 11 minutes which blew the scoreline out after Nordsjaelland had some gilt-edged scoring opportunities early in the second half.

Chelsea were tried early by Kasper Hjulmand's side who were doing well with a neat passing game but the Blues hit the lead just after the half-hour mark when Fernando Torres dispossessed Enoch Adu before laying off for Frank Lampard who slotted it into the path of Juan Mata to fire home.

Nordsjaelland had a number of strong equalising chances in the second half but they conceded again when David Luiz hit a perfect free-kick inches over the wall and in off the upright with about ten minutes left.

Chelsea's 1-0 lead late in the game was turned into a two-goal buffer by Luiz before Mata made it an even more comfortable advantage with his second of the night minutes later with a neat finish after he attempted to play in Lampard with the ball deflecting back into his path.

Roberto Di Matteo's men weren't done there and they managed a fourth in the final minute of regular time when Torres played a clever ball for Oscar who cut down the left and squared it up for Ramires to tap home unmarked.

Earlier, the impressive Jores Okore courageously put himself on the line to divert Victor Moses' fourth-minute backpost header onto the upright from Oscar's stand up cross before Lampard fired a curling effort over the crossbar.

In the 23rd minute, Torres forced a strong save from Jesper Hansen when he volleyed a bouncing ball goalward prior to Norsjaelland's best chance of the first half when Patrick Mtiliga forced Petr Cech to get low and safely hold.

Hansen again denied Torres late in the opening 45 minutes with a sharp save before the Spaniard flicked home Branislav Ivanovic's attempt from the follow-up but he was rightly flagged offside.

The home side came hard at the Blues when the scoreline read 1-0, but Joshua John flashed just inches wide from outside the area less than ten minutes into the second term.

On the hour-mark, Mikkel Beckmann should have done much better with his free header from Okore's lovely ball before Cech did well to deny captain Nicolai Stokholm's swerving effort moments later.

John was desperately unlucky not to level for the Danes with just under 20 minutes remaining when he struck goalward from 18 yards but Cech managed to parry it onto the woodwork.

But after that it was open slather for Chelsea who continued their good beginning to the season by grabbing their fourth point in Group E following the 2-2 draw with Juventus a fortnight ago as Nordsjaelland remain without a point and a goal after their 2-0 opening defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk.
