Champions League: Man City hit three past Bayern Munich

Manchester City were deserved 3-0 winners over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the this Champions League quarter final.

Manchester City adapted better to the atrocious conditions of swirling wind and rain to lead 1-0 at half time.

The hosts has started thebrighter and dominated their German opponents without creating many clear cut chances.

Ilkay Gundogan glanced a header wide and Jack Grealish was beginning to cause the Bayern defence problems. Erring Haaland almost caught keeper Yann Sommer out as he delayed clearing the ball.

Alphonse Davies had Bayern's first effort but shot wide. Haaland was then fed by Grealish but his weak effort was easily saved.

But on 27 minutes Rodri gave City a deserved lead with a magnificent curling shot from outside the penalty area. The score was almost doubled but Sommer despite being on the floor saved with his legs from Gundogan.

On the stroke of half time the hosts were given a warning as former City player Leroy Sane flashed a shot just past the post.

And Bayern began the second period as they ended the first with Ederson blocking a fierce effort from Sane. Then City's keeper had to be quick off his line to deny the same player.

The Bavarians defence got into a terrible tangle but Kevin De Bruyne and Grealish both failed to take advantage.

But Bayern were showing now more attacking intent with Sane the main threat. Back came City and Nathan Ake went close. From the resulting corner Sommer palmed over a Ruben Dias volley.

The second half was becoming an end to end encounter and in the 70th minute it went in City's favour as Bernado Silva headed home a powerfully from Haaland's cross.

City quickly made it three when Haaland pounced from close range with Bayern's defence in disarray.

A fourth almost arrived but Sommer saved brilliantly Rodri's header.

The Germans have lost more European Cup quarter-finals than any other club with 12 defeats and will need to produce something special in the second leg in a weeks time if that is not to become 13.

By avoiding defeat against Bayern City have set a new English club record of 25 successive home games without defeat in the Champions League.
