Champions League: Man City cruise past Copenhagen

Manchester City eased past Copenhagen in Group G with a totally dominant performance for a 5-0 victory.

It took Erling Haaland just 7 minutes to continue his remarkable scoring form for City when Copenhagen allowed him too much space in the centre of goal from Joao Cancelo's cross to smash the opener.

The game then became a game of attack versus defence with the home side totally dominant. Jack Grealish was thwarted three times by fine saves from keeper Kamil Grabara who also denied Haaland, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez.

And even when the former Liverpool stopper was beaten the post came to his rescue from Bernando Silva. But then in the space of seven, first half minutes his luck ran out. Haaland pounced as the Polish custodian fumbled a shot to score then a Sergio Gomes effort was deflected by defender David Khocholava for an own goal.

You could say it never rains but pours which would be appropriate as the first half was played in heavy showers but at least the Danish supporters enjoyed themselves accompanied by a very loud drummer.

Haaland was substituted at half-time for Cole Palmer whose early shot from distance was well saved. But City were not to be denied and Mahrez made it four from the penalty spot after New Zealander Marko Stamenic pulled down Aymeric Laporte.

The game now was City attacking and keeping possession with Copenhagen playing the damage limitation game.

Sloppy City defending almost gifted substitute Paul Mukaiu a consolation goal and from the resulting corner another substitute, Valdemar Lund, glanced a header narrowly wide.

The home side responded immediately and a driving Grealish run ended with a tap-in for Julian Alvarez. The home supporters were willing Grealish to score as twice the England international went close late-on.

Copenhagen have now failed to score in their last six matches against English opposition and that record never looked in danger tonight. The Danish champions were under new management for this game, Jacob Neestrup having replaced Jess Thorup as coach on 20 September and he can only be grateful City are not regular opposition.
