Champions League: Man City book their place in knockout phase

Manchester City are into the knockout stages with two games to spare after a comfortable 3-0 success over BSC Young Boys.

A first half of total domination by City saw them ease into a two goal lead. The only threat paused by the Swiss opposition was from their fans who kept up a constant barrage of noise despite having little to cheer about.

Young Boys have never won a Champions League away game in the Group Stage or defeated an English team and they never looked like breaking that dismal record.

City keeper Ederson was a virtual spectator but it was not until first half injury time that the hosts made the scoreline look more comfortable. Phil Foden skipped past a clumsy tackle inside the penalty area before shooting into the far corner.

City should have opened the scoring in the 6th minute but after some brilliant solo skills from Jack Grealish his pass to Rico Lewis was cleared off the line by Loris Benito.

Kyle Walker's free kick was well saved by Anthony Racioppi who also stopped Foden's follow up effort.

But the inevitable opener came from the penalty spot when Sandro Lauper brought down Matheus Nines and Erlang Harland sent the Bern keeper the wrong way.

Within seven minutes of the restart Harland made it three with a glorious twenty yard strike into the top corner. And within a minute the visitor's night went from bad too worse as Lauper saw red for a second yellow offence.

For the remainder of the game City spurned a host of chances but the result was all that mattered and gives boss Pep Guardiola the option of resting players for the remaining Group matches and the home side are now unbeaten in 28 home European matches.
