Manchester United have put their Premier League woes behind them by finishing top of Group A in the Champions League courtesy of a 1-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk.
David Moyes' men had lost their last two domestic matches, both at Old Trafford, but managed to bounce back with a narrow yet much-needed victory in Europe.
Phil Jones scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute when he got on the end of substitute Robin van Persie's corner to fire home with a volley after Shakhtar's defence failed to clear.
The goal - their first in 280 minutes of football - gave United a fourth win from six group outings in the Champions League and allowed them to avoid losing three in a row at home for the first time since 1962.
United ended up topping the Group A table by four points to second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who finished on 10, while Shakhtar will drop into the Europa League with Real Sociedad well off the pace at the bottom on just one solitary point.
