Champions League 2nd leg: Man City held by Sporting Lisbon but progress

Man City duly qualified for the quarter finals of the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate following a dull scoreless stalemate with Sporting Lisbon.

The game was won in the first leg in Portugal were City triumphed 5-0 which was Sporting Lisbon's heaviest home European defeat and City's biggest away win in UEFA competition.

City have never failed to win a European tie after an away first-leg victory and that coupled with a 17 game unbeaten run at home in Europe showed the magnitude of the task for their Portuguese visitor's.

And any hopes of a miraculous comeback ended with a scoreless first half in which City were dominant knocking the ball around with ease under very little pressure. Yet it was over 20 minutes before we had a flurry of chances.

Raheem Sterling twice came close and Phil Foden brought a fine save out of Sporting keeper Antonio Adan. Sporting were playing for pride and had a couple of half chances as Islam Slimani and Paulinho got behind the City defence but failed to take advantage.

City thought they had taken the lead within a minute of the restart but VAR ruled Gabriel Jesus offside after good work from substitute Riyad Mahrez.

With the home side in control the game became rather stale as City attacked and Sporting defended and what entertainment there was came from the noisy visiting supporters. Such was City's comfort zone they substituted first choice keeper Ederson for veteran Scott Carson.

Sporting suddenly started to look an attacking threat but a lack of quality meant they rarely looked like scoring although Carson did well to save when Paulinho was through on goal. Then John Stones had to clear as Sporting looked certain to score before almost finding the net at the other end in injury time.

The game then drifted to its scoreless conclusion but for City the job had been completed in Portugal a fortnight ago.
