Celtic signing Brown won't accept understudy role

"No-one wants to be a squad player, and I do want to try to oust Artur," says Brown hopefully, "but he is a fantastic goalkeeper and it's a really difficult job."

The goalkeeper's union in action. Privately, he and every other No.2 wrestles with his conscience: a broken finger, a hamstring pull; anything for a piece of the action.

"I do look at what Allan has done at Rangers, though, and I think he's shown what can be achieved, "adds Brown. McGregor, Rangers' No.1 after years looking in, is now Scotland back-up goalkeeper.

"At this stage last year, both Lionel Letizi and Stefan Klos were in front of him and he finished as the No.1," Brown says admiringly. "Things can change in football, so all you can do is work hard at training and try to do a job when you get the opportunity.

"There can be injuries and suspensions throughout the course of a season and you have to be ready when and if you are called upon."
