Peter Cavanagh has joined Everton boss Roberto Martinez's coaching staff.
The Liverpool Echo says the former Accrington Stanley and Fleetwood Town midfielder had agreed to move to Southport on a player-coach role for the season.
But the 33-year-old will take a role coaching the academy at Everton as part of Martinez's staff.
"I'm obviously disappointed to lose Peter but I understand his decision," said Southport boss Paul Carden.
