CARLING CUP 4th ROUND: Man Utd struggle past Wolves, West Brom overcome Leicester, Wigan see off Swansea and Birmingham given a fright by Brentford.

Manchester United again relied on Javier Hernandez for a late winner, this time in the 90th minute to see off Wolves 3-2 at Old Trafford. Twice and understrength United took the lead but both times Wolves fought back to level, but the Midlanders did not have enough time for a third equaliser.

The game had been looking to be heading for extra-time with all the goals arriving in the second half.

The opener had arrived on 56 minutes when Bebe claimed his first goal, a deflection over keeper Wayne Hennessey.

But George Elokobi restored parity just minutes later as he powered home a brilliant header.

United were back in front on 70-minutes as Ji-Sung Park put the hosts back in front, only for Kevin Foley to peg United back again.

Substitute Hernandez claimed the winner when he coolly chipped the Wolves keeper as United broke quickly.

Conquerors of Liverpool in the previous round, Northampton Town, met their match at Ipswich were they went down 3-1 despite taking an early lead through Liam Davis.

Carlos Edwards fired home an equaliser before half-time and Damien Delaney and Tamas Priskin's eased the Tractors Boys to victory after the break.

Roberto Martinez ended the run of his former club Swansea as his current team Wigan scored twice at the DW Stadium to progress 2-0.

After a goalless first-half, which Swansea dominated, the Latics took the lead through Mauro Boselli and the lead was doubled with a last minute penalty from Ben Watson.

West Bromwich Albion eased into the quarter-finals with a convincing 4-1 win in the Midlands derby at Sven Goran Eriksson's Leicester. The Premier League club's class told over their Championship neighbours with three second half goals after Leicester briefly threatened when they levelled.

Simon Cox gave The Baggies a half-time lead, but the home side levelled just after the break as Nicky Shorey put through his own net.

But West Brom were soon back in front as they gifted a goal to Somen Tchoyi.

Steven Reid then headed a third before Cox fired home a last minute clincher for The Baggies.

Brentford were on the brink of another upset after dumping Everton out of the competition in the last round.

They were within a minute of another famous victory, this time over Birmingham at St Andrews until veteran Kevin Phillips cancelled out Sam Wood's 68th minute opener.

Extra time failed to separate the teams and Birmingham eventually triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shoot out.

Blues keeper Maik Taylor was the hero as he saved Craig Woodman's effort from 12 yards.
